This summer the Community Cupboard Garden was established to help provide fresh, home grown, organic vegetables to our clients. We received 105 seedlings of tomatoes, peppers and squash plus 100 packets of seeds. Using the square foot garden method we created twelve, 4’ x 7.5’ gardens and a large compost area.
Great beginnings! Early June the garden is tilled and planting begun. With a donation of slate we were able to make weed-free pathways between some gardens. We also received a donation from the Wissahickon School District garden club enabling us to purchase 2 rain barrels, plus wood and netting to build trellis’ for the cucumbers and tomatoes.
Peppers, squash, and cucumbers beginning to take root.
Many, many thanks to the volunteers that helped make this garden a success!!
Volunteer Avin Granneman taking a break from weeding
Jay Granneman - WMS 6th grade –spent his summer planting many seeds, building & helping to install trellis’, removing bugs and picking green beans. Jack & Thomas Myers - The Most Awesomest Bean pickers! They picked 5 lbs. of green beans from 2 sq. ft. gardens! Employee Steve Toner volunteered to come early every morning during the hottest days to make sure our ‘babies’ were watered. Avin Granneman – who helped with bugs, picking and bagging vegetables. And volunteers John, Chrissy, Alex & Matt that pulled every weed in one day!
Thanks everyone, you did a great job and I hope you’ll be with us for next year’s garden project
